By: Anna Crisostomo
Planning a wedding can feel like a whirlwind, but breaking it down into manageable steps makes it exciting and less stressful. Whether you’re preparing for a grand church wedding or an intimate civil ceremony, here’s a guide to help you navigate your dream day in the Philippines.
12-18 Months Before
- Set Your Budget: Decide how much you’re willing to spend and allocate for every aspect including a buffer for unforeseen expenses.
- Create Your Guest List: Determine the number of attendees to pick the right venue and catering.
- Choose a Theme: Filipino traditions or a modern aesthetic? Let your theme guide all decisions.
- Book the Venue: Secure your church, garden, or beach location early as venues fill up fast!
6-12 Months Before
- Hire Key Vendors: Book your photographer, videographer, florist, and caterer.
- Secure Your Attire: Choose your wedding gown, groom’s suit, and outfits for the entourage. Allow enough time for fittings and alterations.
- Prepare Documents: For church weddings, compile baptismal and confirmation certificates. Remember, civil ceremonies also require a marriage license.
- Engage with Suppliers: Finalize contracts for decoration, invitations, and other needs.
3-6 Months Before
- Send Invitations: Ensure your guest list is finalized and send out invitations.
- Plan the Program: Work with your host or coordinator to design a smooth program flow.
- Organize Pre-Wedding Events: Pamamanhikan, bridal shower, bachelor’s party, and despedida de soltera make the journey meaningful.
1-2 Months Before
- Confirm with Vendors: Reconfirm schedules, payments, and deliverables.
- Finalize Hair and Makeup: Book trials to perfect your look for the big day.
- Plan Reception Details: Arrange seating and finalize the menu.
1-2 Weeks Before
- Pack Essentials: Prepare an emergency or first aid kit, documents, and other last-minute needs. You can put them in plastic boxes for easier handling.
- Double-Check Everything: Go through your checklist with your planner or trusted family member.
Wedding Day
- Stay Calm and Savor the Moment: Trust your planning and enjoy every second!
- Stay Hydrated and Energized: Amid the excitement, don’t forget to drink water and eat small, energy-boosting snacks to keep yourself refreshed throughout the fast-paced day.
4 Tips for Stress-Free Planning
- Communicate Clearly: Keep everyone, especially your spouse, on the same page.
- Embrace Help: Accept help from family and friends as it lightens the load.
- Stay Flexible: Be prepared for last-minute changes…it’s all part of the journey.
- Focus on What Matters: Don’t stress over the small stuff. What counts is the love you’re celebrating.
My Wedding Planning Journey
When my husband and I started planning our church wedding in August 2022, we knew it would be a long but rewarding process. By May 2023, we exchanged vows in a beautiful church ceremony in Tagaytay. But before that, we also had a civil wedding in November 2022, planned in under two months!
Both experiences were unique and special in their own ways. Planning wasn’t easy, but everything came together with the unwavering support of our families. My in-laws were incredibly supportive, and every family member pitched in, from arranging details to lending emotional support. With teamwork, we turned what seemed like an overwhelming task into unforgettable memories.
Moreover, our OFW parents made the effort to fly back home to witness and celebrate both ceremonies. Their presence was invaluable and made our special days even more meaningful.
The journey taught me that wedding planning isn’t just about logistics—it’s about love, support, and cherishing the people who make it all possible. Whether you’re planning for months or pulling it together in weeks, remember: it’s the love and celebration that truly matter.
Happy planning!
